Press release "How effective is teacher training?" on the work of the Emerging Group published
06.11.2023
There are clear gaps in the theoretical basis and empirical implementation of research into teacher education. This was the result of research by the new Emerging Group "Proving the Effectiveness of Teacher Education" at the University of Cologne, which has now published its first paper. With the help of an analysis of almost 30 previous overview studies, which in total refer to over 2,000 individual studies on the effectiveness of initial and further teacher training, the team found that empirical studies have so far too often focussed on individual questions and subject areas and still make too little reference to each other. This makes empirically supported theorising more difficult. Based on these findings, the research team developed a classification that systematises the processes and criteria of empirical studies on the effectiveness of teacher training in a matrix. The group's first scientific publication entitled "Teacher education effectiveness as an emerging research paradigm: A synthesis of reviews of empirical studies published over three decades (1993-2023)" has now been published as a seminal paper in the international Journal of Curriculum Studies.

Report on the ZuS teacher education monitoring graduate study on the BMBF homepage
In ZuS project, Quality Assurance field of action, the established monitoring of teacher training was expanded to include an important component as part of the graduate study. The graduate report finalised in February 2023 focuses on the questions of what skills students at the University of Cologne have at the end of the standard period of study and what changes in skills can be observed during their studies. The BMBF is now also reporting on this as part of the teacher training quality campaign.
The entire graduate report is available free of charge here.
